Thorning, James headline All-SSC Women's Track awards

MELBOURNE, Fla. - The Sunshine State Conference announced the 2025 All-Sunshine State Conference Track teams on Tuesday afternoon. The Nova Southeastern women's track team had four student-athletes recognized, including the SSC Distance Runner of the Year and Freshman of the Year.

The honorees for the Sharks women's track program included two first-team members, Jillian Thorning and Sativa James. Leena Saidi and Eden Toal were also recognized as they were named to the All-SSC second team.

Jillian Thorning was named the SSC Distance Runner of the Year after winning the 1500 meters with an impressive time of 4:34.64 at the SSC Outdoor Track Championship. Jillian Thorning is the first Women's Track athlete to earn such an honor since Peri Bowman and Jessica Osteen split the Individual award back in 2012-13. Thorning, a sophomore from Doylestown, Pennsylvania, also earned a second-place finish in the 800 meters at the conference championship. She finished the season with a season-best mark in the 1500 meters of 4:31.80, which leads the conference while also running a school record time of 2:12.81 in the 800 meters.  Her 2025 campaign included a 17:02 time in the 5000 meters, a new school record for Nova Southeastern.

Sativa James was named Freshman of the Year after winning the SSC title in the 400 meters. Sativa James is the first NSU Freshman to win the award since 2012-13, when Ciona Williams won the honor. The West Palm Beach, Florida product finished with a time of 56.39, 1.81 seconds faster than the second-place finisher. James also finished second in the 200, running a time of 25.15, while her best time of the year was 24.86.

The women's program had two other placers on the All-SSC second team, including Eden Toal, who placed second in the 1500 meters and third in the 800 meters, and Leena Saidi, who finished second in the 10,000 meters with a time of 37:30.88.
